Nias House Panels. Sitting 90 miles off the coast of Sumatra, Nias has had a tulmultuous past, but nothing has surpassed the terrible devastation of the Tsunami of December 2004. The principal village suffered 90% percent fatalities! Always a repository of historically depictive art, Nias art now may now well be only available through peviously escaped works. Shown here are typical house panels, but the carved panel on the right is rather unique in representing a slave in bondage. This is not a mythical rendering but rather a momento of a not so distant past. From $410

Rama  Shinta figures.  A reminder of the past are these delightful carved figures from Central Java . Reminiscent of a time when this part of the world was largely Hindu are these Rama and Shinta or King and Queen figures. Frequently found in the small villages of Central Java, they are faithfully produced by village artisans, and many are decades old. Some are standing while others kneel reflectively.Carved hardwood and hand painted. From $250 per pair.

Babi Barong Mask.  A very essential character in renditions of the Balinese Barong Dance is the Babi or wild boar. An articulated mask permitting the jaws to clack together with resounding effect during the Barong Dance drama. This wonderful old piece is masterfully carved, painted and dramatically posed . $1125.

The Toba Batak people of North Central Sumatra have a well deserved reputation as masterful carvers. Preeminate in their carvings is depicted the Singa Singa or guardian spirit shown on the left, a mythical beast faithful and stalwart in protecing all of its charges. So it is with this delightful calendar whose mystic etchings are known only to the Batak. Carved tropical hardwood and bone.$75.
