| The Indonesian Island Archipelogo is world renowned for fine textiles. It is a culturally diverse area , and the production of hand loomed textiles reflects this fact. Although the commonality of Ikat weaving, for example, is found among numerous groups, strong regional distinctions abound as well.Exhibited here is a small sampling of our broad and selective collection of rare or seldom seen weavings of this area. Sumba sarong. This tube sarong is dated at approximately 100 years despite the vibrancy of the colors. The supplementary weave near the bottom depicts a very common theme and includes skull trees and horses.Worn only on ceremonial occasions few of the examples surviving may boast this age. Some moth damage on black field. Length 48" by 24" wide. $410 |
Toba Batak Ragidup This most sacred of all Toba Batak textiles may take years to produce and is exceedingly rare today. It is spun from native cotton and dyed from natural vegetable dyes. Comprised of 5 parts which include 2 side panels, a middle section of ikat and 2 supplementary extremely fine woven end panels. Length 71.5" by 45.5" wide. $1200. |

Lampung Ship Cloth. Reaching their zenith of popularity in the late 19th. Century these textiles represented the ship taking people to heaven, and thus the term "shipcloth" which is the common representation. Finely woven with supplementary yarns forming the pattern these products of the weaver's art are highly collectible and sought after items today. From Lampung, South Sumatra. Sasak Prayer Cloth. This exceptional example from the Island of Lombok is in fine condition despite its age of approximately 50 years. Hand spun native cotton in traditional tan form the background for the black and red supplementary weaving. An unusually balanced piece.Length 41" by 21" wide. $425 |
